I'm in love...

I saw at Cluck Cluck Sew a mini quilt inspired by this one. It's hard to say which is prettier! And because the original post includes a tutorial now I know that I will have no excuse not to make one too. Just when I decided Helena's crib quilt would be a disappearing nine patch design...

I wonder why...

Não me apetece, não me sinto inspirada. E quando é assim não forço. Qual seria a lógica?

Lately I've been full of "someday I'll do this" and "someday I'll make that" but I have no sewing to show for it. I'm not in the mood for sewing, I don't feel inspired. And when this happens I don't push it. What would be the logic in that? But, still, I wonder: why is that?

Moldes / Patterns

Parece-me algo tão óbvio e natural, talvez porque sempre tenha visto a minha avó Aurora e a minha mãe a fazer o mesmo.

So, I was thinking about patterns...
I have a pattern for an apron, another for a bag and another for a purse, all from Amy Butler and I love them. I'm also going to be getting patterns for dress, top and skirts as a birthday gift (I chose them, I ordered them, that's why I know I'm getting them heeheh). But most of the time I do something out of scratch, without any pattern that is. It seems really obvious and natural to me, maybe because that's how I've always seen my gran and my mother do it. (Remind me of telling the story of my grandma Aurora one of these days). They would just look at something already made and imagine how it had been made - pretty much like reverse engineering -, then they would just make it. And I do it like that too. Don't you? And could that fit into the pattern category? Am I the only one who doesn't think a pattern is an absolute necessity?

Crise de identidade / Identity crisis

Sei do que gosto - quadrados, cor, simplicidade, calor, funcionalidade... Sei quem admiro - Amy Butler, Kaffee Fassett...

Pensei, pensei, pensei... e decidi que "by Daisy" define-me melhor.

I know what I like - squares, colour, simplicity, warmth, function... I know who I admire - Amy Butler, Kaffee Fassett... And I have some fellow crafters that I follow more closely (but I'm not going to say who eheheh). I just didn't know exactly who I was as a "crafter" myself.

That's why I needed to change the blog look, but also, and most of all, the name. It didn't make sense writing under the alias "Uma dona babada" because this isn't where I write about my love for animals. I thought a lot and figured "by Daisy" defined me better. It's one of my favourite nicknames of mine, anyway. And I do have a lot of nicknames!

This makes perfect sense to me, but I'm aware that it's just for me and not for other people. But that's ok.

A slap in the face

Ando a brincar às costuras há uns meses e adoro - dá-me prazer, faz-me bem.

Ooops!

I'm writing today with a anew sense of humbleness. I've been toying around with sewing for a little while and I love it - it brings be pleasure, it's does me good. But when I visit other blogs from people who take sewing and quilting more seriously and for a long time... I'm KO! Seriously, there are fantastic people out there, far more handy and imaginative than me, who do priceless pieces. Will I ever even reach half the level of my new idols?

I would like to think so. That someday my pieces will no longer be just to give to my closest friends. That someday they will be good enough to actually sell them to a real client. That someday I'll have a brand name and an Etsy Store.

But, for now, time is nowhere to be seen. I'm once again missing buying fabrics, doing a piece from scratch, going to classes, learning... using my imagination. But between work, the volunteer work with rescued animals, the dates with friends and the family reunions, it has been close to impossible. And I don't like to go up to my workspace just "because", I have to be in the real mood for it. Again, it's supposed to be a pleasure and not an obligation.

PS - The little pc purse I'm doing to Nônô remains unfinished. Ooops!

Aceito sugestões / Any suggestions?

This is the famous runner from the patchwork class. It is destined to be something other than a runner, something that I don't know what it is yet...

Múltiplos de 3... ou não! / Multiples of 3... or not!

When I need to combine 3 fabrics, I only come up with combinations of 2, of 4 or even of more...

(the photos are still horrible because I take them with my cell and lots of times at night... but it's just that I always forget to take the camera with me!)

E porque não? / And why not?

Let the games begin!

*** Mind the translation ***

Use patchwork in the daily-use sewing projects instead of just thinking about big quilts??? I think I've just found my project for today. Let the games begin!

What I love about sewing...

Is that the sky is the limit.
The possible combinations are infinite and it only takes you to change the fabrics to have the same project turn out completely different.

Viva a imaginação! Vivaaa! Vivaaa!

Long live the imagination! Hip-hip-hurrayyyy!!!

Nada feito... / Not a chance...

When I finally got to go to the shop, certain that I would be put out of my misery, I found out that the fabrics with which I had fallen in love were practically sold out. There were a little bit of each, some there were nothing at all, and I felt so sad because I had great projects in mind (by "great" I mean a duvet cover for my bed at least 2m x 3m). When I'm finally starting to feel at ease to fligh higher and I decide to make something for myself rather that to give someone else... not a chance!

What I learned from this is: if there are new fabrics in a shop, we must run there and buy it. We can't postpone, oh because I'm busy, oh because I can't spend any more money right now, oh because on week days there's so much traffic to cross the bridge. Oh and now you don't get to have the fabrics you want, here you go!

Sewing junkie

A sério, estou a "ressacar"!

*** Mind the Translation ***

I'm so busy with extra work every night that I don't have time to relax a little bit, go to the gym (one staircase away), watch a romatic film and, above all, sewing.
Really, I have a "hangover"! I haven't sewed since last saturday. Dreadful! And so it will stay for the next few days (until the end of the month, actually). Really dreadful!

Costurar não é só costurar.
Muitas vezes, costurar é cortar, alfinetar, desmanchar...

...mas continuo a adorar!

Sewing is not just sewing.
A lot of the time, sewing is cutting, pinning, undoing...

...but I'm still loving it!

*** Mind the Translation ***

My machine is on its way, it's supposed to take 4 week days to get here and there was a slight possibility that it would arrive today, which it didn't, so I guess I'll have to wait until monday.

I called to this one shop where I got my first lesson to find out if tomorrow there would be a lesson again and what would be the project. They couldn't give me a final answer, but implied that perhaps noone would be at the shop while FIA (the most important international craftmanship fair we have here every year) lasts. To not have a second lesson right away is actually a good thing, because it gives me time to practise a little bit when my sewing machine arrives.

After work, and after a delicious ice-cream at Santini's, C. and I went to check out another shop, which really is a lot closer to where I live than the other shop, and that is something to bear in mind in the future. I loved the shop and the lady to whom we spoke, and we both asked to be kept in the loop about the next workshops - C. is interest in decoupage and I'm interested in learning patchwork. I only hope they don't decide to wait until september on account of the summer holidays...

So, waiting for the sewing machine, waiting for the next sewing lesson, waiting for the next patchwork workshop... Waitiiiing!!!

(I really must control my impatience if I am to dedicate myself to patchwork...)

*** Mind the Translation ***

Sick of asking R to pass along little notes to the former-owner-of-the-now-mine-super-machine, I wrote her an email myself. I told her how happy I was to be starting my new hobby in such great style and assure her that her sewing machine would be well taken care of. And, because I wanted to be in good terms with her, I asked her if she would be so kind as to give me some advice when I needed.

She was very sweet and immediatly agreed to help me in what ways she could. Well, what I didn't know then was that she has been quilting fro 30 years... hand-made quilting! That's why she doesn't need this sewing machine (besides the fact that she has two other and that she really prefers to handstich). 30 years??? I'M not even 30 years old!

Two things come to my mind: to salute her and to hide myself where noone can find me.

Thank God for eBay

***Mind the Translation***

There is a Portuguese saying about keeping secrecy about your business to ensure their success, but I can't help myself: I found a second-hand Bernina Aurora 440QE on eBay, which is just perfect because it's out of the question to buy it new (it costs more than my wedding dress).

I want to start my new hobby with a good investment, buying a sewing machine that will allow me to grow and that I feel confident that will last a lifetime, but at the same time, I can't forget that's all it is - a hobby.

I've decided to buy a Bernina. If I can't have this one (which happens to be a bargain, because it's new and half the standard price), then I'll get a cheapper model, I don't mind.

But everyone knows that plan A is always better than plan B!!!

Dilema / Dilemma

***Mind the Translation***

I've never had a sewing machine in my whole life. I grow up surrounded by them, but never had one to call my own.
But I always thought that if one day I got one, it would be a Singer. It's a matter of fact.
But now they are telling me that this brand is one its way to bankrupcy and that it's getting difficult by the day to find the pieces to fix it...?!

My oh my! My significant other is telling me that he doesn't speak "sewing machine" and that it's up to me to choose the one I want him to get me.

Birthday countdown

Adooooro fazer anos!

***Mind the Translation***

I love my birthdays! (Even when I'm in denial about my age). And I get the party started way before the actual date.

What I love the most about my birthday is that for just one day I get to be the centre of attentions, I get to be spoiled, lots of people call me and I feel that everyone around me is happy and celebrating something as simple as: "I'm alive".

Of course I also enjoy gifts... The problem is that when I'm asked about what I would like to get I never know what to answer. The thing is: I like to receive gifts not because of how much they were worth at the shop, but because they are the proof that someone dedicated their time and attention trying to find me the perfect gift.

But this time around...

Almost everyone decided to get me my present in advance (and by almost everyone I mean my parents and my in-laws ehehe) and it is precisely the first time that I know what I wanted to get. So I had no choice but to ask it from the one who usually understands and fulfills my wishes better than anyone: my loving significant other!

And what is my birthday wish, you may ask? A sewing machine, of course!
