Compras e costurices / Shopping and sewing

Sou uma daquelas pessoas que gosta de dormir até tarde. Poucas coisas me fazem levantar cedo da cama a um fim-de-semana. Passear os meus cães é, obviamente, uma delas. Ir para uma acção do SOS Animal também. E costurar também.
Por isso, hoje acordei cedo e fui para a Arco Íris a Metro ter uma aula de costura com a professora Aldina. Já não ia a estas aulas desde o Verão, porque o horário não bate certo e além disso tenho andado mais virada para as aulas de patchwork na Dotquilts. Só que eu comprei um molde da Amy Butler para fazer uns aventais agora para o Natal e precisava de ajuda para fazer o primeiro, para depois dar início à produção em série. (Já agora: demorou mas já o acabei e ficou tãooooo giro).
Só que quando cheguei lá, a aula afinal não era de manhã... era só às 15h! Claro que não ia voltar para casa, gastar gasóleo e portagens, blablabla. Claro que fiquei lá e claro que o dinheiro que não gastei em gasóleo e portagens, blablabla, e muito mais, diga-se, gastei-o a comprar tecidos.
Ou seja, como devem calcular, não fiquei minimamente chateada por ter de fazer horas... Aquela loja é um paraíso para uma viciada em tecidos como eu!


I'm one of those people who like to sleep through the morning. There are very few things that get me up early on a weekend. Walking the dogs is, obviously, one of them. Volunteering in one of SOS Animal's campaigns is another. And then sewing is another.
So, today I woke up early and headed to Arco Iris a Metro to have a sewing lesson with Ms. Aldina. I haven't been to one of those since Summer, because the schedule doesn't work for me and besides I've been busy with the patchwork lessons at Dotquilts. The thing is I had bouth an Amy Butler pattern to do some aprons for Christmas and I needed help with the first one, before initializing the mass production. (By the way: it took me a long time but now it's finished and it looks sooooo great).
Except that, when I got there, the lesson was only at 3 pm! I wasn't going back home, spend gas and tolls and whatnot, obviously, so of course I stayed there and of course I spent all the money I saved on gas and tolls and whatnot, and then some more, buying fabrics!
It figures, I wasn't that upset to have to spend some time there... That shop sure is heaven for a fabric addicted like me!

Linda menina / good girl

Tenho andado a portar-me muito bem. Todo o tempo livre que tenho (embora não seja muito, de facto) tem sido aproveitado ao máximo pois tenho muitas prendas de Natal por fazer.
Já estou bastante adiantada com a prenda da minha cunhada, que é, admitamos, a maior, embora não necessariamente a mais difícil. Deixo isso para os aventais, sem dúvida.

Fiz uma pausa na minha manta para o sofá, mas mesmo assim tenho tudo também muito adiantado.

E, last but not the least, ontem não fui sozinha à aula na Dotquilts! A minha grande grande grande querida e linda amiga Janeca também foi e começou um projecto muito giro: uma colcha aos quadrados só com tecidos sólidos de cores primárias para o sobrinho de 3 aninhos. A ideia dela é depois fazer um aplique de um carro em estilo naive num dos quadrados.

I have been behaving myself. All the free time I have (though it is not as much as I would like) has been occupied with sewing, for I have a lot of Xmas presents ahead. I'm deep into my sister-in-law's present, which is, let's say, the biggest endeavour, though not necessarily the most difficult. That I leave to the aprons, no doubt.

I'm taking a break of my sofa quilt, but it's not forgotten, on the contrary.

And, last but not the least, yesterday I didn't go alone to my class! My great great great dear and beautiful friend Janeca went along and started her own cute little project: a bed quilt with squares of solid primary colours for her 3-year old nephew. She also thought of doing an appliqué of a naive car in one of the squares.

Fazendo as contas / Doing the math

Estou muito orgulhosa: consegui avançar o suficiente na minha quilt para poder ir à aula esta semana com algo para mostrar. Tenho neste momento 176 triângulos cortados, cosidos e com as bainhas abertas. São 22 de 4 cores diferentes mais os respectivos 88 triângulos de cor base (alaranjado). E tal como a Luisa tinha dito bastou aplicar-lhe um bocadinho e fiz isto num instante (demorei aproximadamente 5 horas em todo o processo). O meu único problema de consciência é que me falta os quadrados da barra, já era suposto ter mais, só que esqueci-me de como fiz os que já tenho... A sério que gostava de não ser tão esquecida, mas tenho esperança que o patchwork me ajude nisso também, já que é tão terapêutico!



I'm really proud of myself: I manage to get a good advance on my quilt, enough so that I can go to my class this week with something to show. Right now I have 176 triangles, all cut, sewn and pressed. It's 22 from 4 different colours plus the corresponding 88 of the main colour (orangish). And just like Luisa had said it only took me a small effort and it didn't take that long (aproximately 5 hours for the whole process). The only thing that's weighing on my conscious is that I'm lacking the squares for the side bar, I was supposed to have more by now, it's just that I forgot how I made the ones I already have... I really wish I wasn't so forgetful and I'm hoping doing patchwork will help me with that too, since it's so terapeutical!

You heard me right!

Já tenho falado do quilt que estou a fazer para os meus serões no sofá. Comecei-a nas aulas na Dotquilts, com tecidos que comprei lá, de cores outonais (não por causa da estação mas porque são as cores da minha sala - bege, areia, laranja, chocolate).
Queria aprender a fazer triângulos, por isso o centro vai ser um pin-wheel, a barra que emoldura o centro será um nine-patch, e acho que já sei qual dos tecidos fará o debrum. Mas não posso pôr o carro à frente dos bois, pois a verdade é que estou realmente a procrastinar. Aliás, "procrastinar" talvez não seja a palavra certa, mas não me ocorre outra.
Estou cheia de medo de não gostar, porque acho que não tem muito a ver comigo. Não tenho um motivo lógico para este receio, porque gosto dos tecidos e fui eu quem quis fazer triângulos. Não sei, simplesmente sinto-me mais ligada a quadrados e a tecidos coloridos e alegres.
E também não estou assim tão atrasada. Já tenho tudo cortado e toda a gente sabe que isso é das coisas que leva mais tempo. Certo? hehehe
Eis o que tenho andado a fazer (e a não fazer tanto quanto queria...).




I've mentioned the quilt I'm making for my evenings spent in the couch. I started it in my classes at Dotquilts, using fabrics I bought there, in autumn colors (not because of the season we're in but because those are the colours of my living room - beige, sand, orange and chocolate).
I wanted to learn how to make triangles, so the center top is going to be a pin-wheel pattern, the framing will be a nine-patch, and I think I already know which of the fabrics I'll use for the biding. Oooh, but not so fast. The truth is I have been procrastinating. Well, maybe "procrastinating" isn't the right word, but I can't think of another.
I'm afraid I won't like the result, because I don't think it's "me". I don't have a logic reason to think this way, since I like the fabrics and I was the one who chose to do triangles. I don't know, I just so much more into squares and bright and happy colours.
And I'm not that far behing either. I have everything cut into pieces and everyone knows that is one of the most time consuming tasks. Right? hehehe

Depois da minha primeira aula na Dotquilts, claro que tinha de me esquecer lá dos meus tecidos. E como fui optimista a ponto de pensar que realmente teria tempo para adiantar a barra do meu quilt em casa, como trabalho de casa, fui de propósito lá buscá-los. Aproveitei que não ia para nenhuma aula e comprei também alguns tecidos, que ainda não vou dizer para o que e quem são...

Depois, quando fui para a segunda aula, com o objectivo de aprender a fazer triângulos para o centro do quilt (acabei por escolher um padrão de pinwheel) claro que me esqueci novamente dos tecidos, desta vez em casa. Sim, os tecidos que eu tinha deixado na loja e que fui buscar de propósito, mais valia lá terem ficado, porque não só não adiantei nada como depois tive de comprar mais tecido... Só a mim!

Este fim-de-semana, gostava mesmo de adiantar a barra e de aproveitar que já tenho todos os triângulos cortados. Não vou ter mais nenhuma aula enquanto não completar esta etapa (e claro que morro de medo de entretanto esquecer tudo o que aprendi na aula ehheeheheh).

After my first lesson at Dotquilts, of course I had to leave my fabrics behind. And because I truly believed I would have time do to some homework (silly me), I went back just to get them. And then, because I was there without any hurry to start a lesson, I ended up buying some new fabrics, but I'm not going to say to do what and to whom just yet.

Then, when I went there to have my second lesson, with the sole purpose of doing the triangles for the center top of my quilt (I chose a pinwheel pattern) of course I forgot the fabrics again, but at home! Yes, it would have been better if I just hadn't gone to the store to get them the first time, because not only did I not get work done at home, but then I had to buy more fabrics for the second lesson. Is it just me???

This weekend, I would really like to do some work, in the side bar and in the center top, because I have all the triangles cut and ready. I decided not to have any more lessons until I finish this (and I'm scared to death that I may forget what I learned... ahahaha).

Dotquilts

Ontem tive uma aula de patchwork na Dotquilts e adorei. Não só me dá mais jeito em termos práticos (localização, horário das aulas, etc.) como imediatamente senti uma grande empatia pelo espaço em si e pela pessoa responsável. Esta loja foi aberta há pouco tempo e as aulas funcionam no piso superior, nomeadamente em horário pós-laboral durante os dias de semana e com poucas pessoas de cada vez. Além disso, tenho total liberdade de escolha do projecto (a ideia dos projectos de Natal que andam aí a impingir não me agrada).

Claro que foi bastante cansativo sair do emprego, ir a correr para a Ajuda e ficar sem jantar e quase precisei de ter palitos nos olhos para os manter abertos. Mas valeu a pena e tenciono repetir a dose (mas provavelmente vou levar qualquer coisa para comer...)

Comecei então a fazer o meu primeiro quilt. Será uma manta para o sofá, em substituição das mantas polares pirosas que costumo ter e que num instante ficam com os pêlos dos cães e com borbotos. Por isso, comprei tecidos que normalmente não teriam comprado, quer a nível das cores - do laranja-abóbora ao creme, passando pelo castanho-chocolate -, quer a nível de padrões, o que foi um desafio. Mas acho que vou adorar. Por enquanto estou a fazer uma barra em nine-patch e, como é óbvio, aquilo que não terminei na aula ficou como TPC. A minha próxima aula é já para a semana e mesmo que não tenha as barras feitas, vou começar os triângulos do centro.

Tenho a certeza que vai ficar o máximo e que vou adorar cada minuto.

Yesterday I had a patchwork lesson at Dotquilts and I loved it. Not only it is more practical for me in terms of location and schedule, but I also felt an immediate connection with the place itself and the owner. This shop opened a few months ago and the lessons take place upstairs, after working hours during the week and with few people at a time. Also, I have total freedom in choosing the project (I wasn't a fan of the idea of having to do a Christmas project).

Of course I got really tired because I had to leave work, run to this place, skip dinner and I couldn't barely keep my eyes open. But it was worth it and I intend to do it again (although I'll probably take something to eat with me next time).

And so I started my first quilt. It's going to be a sofa quilt, to replace the cheap blankets I usually have there, that always get dirty with the dog's fur and start looking old really quickly. I had to buy fabrics which I wouldn't normally buy, both in colours - pumpkin-orange, vanilla, chocolate-brown - and in patterns, which was challenging. But I think I'll love it. So far, I'm doing nine-patch side bars, and obviously what I didn't finish during the class I took home as homework. My next class will be next week and even if I don't finish the side bars until then, I'll start the triangles for the center top.

I'm sure it will turn out great and that I'll love every minute in the process.

Um fim-de-semana perfeito / A perfect weekend

Adoooorei o workshop de patchwork. Foi muito intensivo, é certo - passei cerca de 9 horas a cortar e a coser -, mas altamente recompensador. O mais curioso foi perceber que, por ter lido tantos blogs e sites e livros e sei lá mais o quê, a ideia que eu tinha sobre como se faz patchwork estava certa. Mas nada como ter alguém com tanta experiência e gosto genuíno como a querida mestre Paula para nos ensinar alguns truques que só quem sabe pode ensinar.

Como era uma aula para principiantes, estávamos todas no mesmo barco e o ambiente que se gerou foi muito giro (excepção feita para uma certa ovelha tresmalhada, que por acaso até nem era uma ovelha negra, mas sim vestida de branco da cabeça aos pés ehehe).

Era suposto termos acabado a nossa peça durante o tempo da aula, mas apesar de lá ter ficado mais de duas horas do que era suposto eu (e outras pessoas, ok?, não fui a única) voltei para casa sem fazer o quilting e o biding (ou seja, sem ter feito o pesponto que une o patchwork, a espuma e o forro e sem ter posto o debrum à volta da peça inteira para rematar tudo bem). Fica para outro dia, que já estava saturada, confesso... É suposto divertir-me a fazer isto e não matar-me toda para correr a maratona!

I looooooved the patchwork workshop. It' was really intense, it's true - I spent 9 hours cutting and sewing-, but it made me feel fulfilled. The funny thing is, because I read so many blogs and sites and books and God-knows-what, the idea I had about how it is made was right. But having someone so experienced and with true love for the art as dear sensei Paula to teach us all the tricks that only one who knows can teach... that's priceless!

Since it was a beginner's class, we were all in the same boat and the general vibe was the coolest (exception given to a certain black sheep, who actually was wearing white ehehe).

We were supposed to finish our project during the class hours, but despite staying there for over two additional hours, I came home without doing the quilting and biding part. I wasn't the only one not to finish, but I was probably the slowest one... But it's ok, I'll finish it another day, I was already so tired that day.... This is supposed to be for fun, not like a marathon!

Iuuuuuupi!!!

Vai haver um workshop de patchwork para principiantes na Arco-Íris a metro no próximo sábado!!! Já tinha procurado aulas de patchwork noutros sítios. Entre serem caras, calharem a datas impossíveis, etc e tal, já andava a desanimar. Mas eis que as minhas preces foram ouvidas! :)

There will be a patchwork class for beginners next saturday in the same shop were I have my sewing lessons!!! I had looked for patchwork classes in other places. Between being expensive, taking place at impossible dates, etc etc, I was starting to despair. But now my prayers have been answered!

3ª aula / 3rd lesson

Mesmo a calhar! Andava eu a magicar uma bolsa para guardar o portátil-bebé da minha colega Rita e eis que o projecto da aula era esse. Bem, na verdade era uma bolsa para o famoso Magalhães, mas eu adaptei ligeiramente.
Ainda faltam uns retoques e já não é surpresa porque precisei de verificar que estava mesmo à medida do destinatário, mas não deixa de ser a minha dupla prenda de despedida/aniversário para ela e acho que acertei em cheio (modéstia à parte).

Just my luck! I had been thinking about a purse to keep the baby-laptop my colleague Rita has and that was exactly the lesson's project. Well, actually it was a purse to keep the famous Magalhaes laptop, but I slightly adapted it.
I still have some finishing details left, and it is no longer a surprise, because I had to check if it fit the laptop it was meant for, but it still is my double farewell / birthday present and I think I nailed it (if you don't mind me saying it).

É muito fácil de fazer e ideal para estes portáteis pequenos agora tão na moda (alguns trazem uma bolsa de origem mas horrorosa) ou então para quem tem crianças que andam com o Magalhães sempre aos trambolhões para todo o lado, porque tem batting (espuma de acolchoamento, se é que posso traduzir assim).

Aceito encomendas... cof cof!!!

It's very easy to make and it is ideal for those small laptops so hot right now (some bring their own purse but it is ugly) or for the children who carry the Magalhaes laptop everywhere without having any caution with it. And this is because is has batting (the foam for quilting, in a free transalation).

A 1ª aula / The first lesson

Hoje fui à minha 1ª aula de costura. O meu mais-que-tudo tem medo que me passe a pica toda depressa demais. Mas não, é precisamente o oposto, isto é até bastante viciante. Regressei tão orgulhosa do meu primeiro projecto - uma necessaire - e exibi tanto os tecidos e os moldes que arranjei para fazer mais que agora até a minha cunhada quer vir comigo à próxima aula.

Preciso de me preparar para quando a minha querida máquina chegar. Não quero ficar a olhar para ela feita naba sem sequer saber enfiar a linha.

Today I went to my first sewing lesson. My significant other fears that I'll run out of gas too soon. But on the contrary, I find all this quite addicting. I came back from class so proud of my first project and showed around the fabrics and the patterns I got to make more, that even my sister-in-law now wants to go with me next time.
