Compras e costurices / Shopping and sewing

I'm one of those people who like to sleep through the morning. There are very few things that get me up early on a weekend. Walking the dogs is, obviously, one of them. Volunteering in one of SOS Animal's campaigns is another. And then sewing is another.
So, today I woke up early and headed to Arco Iris a Metro to have a sewing lesson with Ms. Aldina. I haven't been to one of those since Summer, because the schedule doesn't work for me and besides I've been busy with the patchwork lessons at Dotquilts. The thing is I had bouth an Amy Butler pattern to do some aprons for Christmas and I needed help with the first one, before initializing the mass production. (By the way: it took me a long time but now it's finished and it looks sooooo great).
Except that, when I got there, the lesson was only at 3 pm! I wasn't going back home, spend gas and tolls and whatnot, obviously, so of course I stayed there and of course I spent all the money I saved on gas and tolls and whatnot, and then some more, buying fabrics!
It figures, I wasn't that upset to have to spend some time there... That shop sure is heaven for a fabric addicted like me!

This stash is a gift from my mother-in-law and are under her care so only after Christmas I'll be playing with them...

Linda menina / good girl

Tenho andado a portar-me muito bem.

E, last but not the least, ontem não fui sozinha à aula na Dotquilts!

I have been behaving myself. All the free time I have (though it is not as much as I would like) has been occupied with sewing, for I have a lot of Xmas presents ahead. I'm deep into my sister-in-law's present, which is, let's say, the biggest endeavour, though not necessarily the most difficult. That I leave to the aprons, no doubt.

I'm taking a break of my sofa quilt, but it's not forgotten, on the contrary.

And, last but not the least, yesterday I didn't go alone to my class! My great great great dear and beautiful friend Janeca went along and started her own cute little project: a bed quilt with squares of solid primary colours for her 3-year old nephew. She also thought of doing an appliqué of a naive car in one of the squares.

I'll be back soon, with photos, I promise! For now... off I go!

Countdown

Christmas is more or less 50 days away and practically all the women in the family will be getting handmade presentes... by Daisy! Given that I have very limited experience and I like to take my time with each piece, I would say that... huh... I should have started a while ago??? Specially taking into consideration that I won't be having that much spare time in the next few weekends, because I'll be atending some classes (a work thing).
But I'm one of those people who depend a lot on ideas. When I was a journalist, finding the right title was everything to me, then I could write a whole article in a blink of an eye - because I already had my angle, my title. This means that until I have an idea, I'm in pain. After having an idea, I feel immediatly relieved. From that to making it a reality is piece of cake.
I won't be saying much about who will get what, because there is a chance they might be reading me now, but... I'll say this much: I'm really excited about the gift I'll be making for my sister-in-law. She is an artist herself (painter, among other things) and there is always a sort of really fun competition about who gets the other one the most original present. The piece I'm making is my own idea and design, I measured it, chose and cut the fabrics, oh and I just can't wait to have it ready! It's the first of the Christmas presents and it will be hard for me to wait until Christmas to see her reaction to it, but thankfully I'll be too preocupied in the meantime with all the other presents...

Yesterday was my mother's birthday.

We don't have an easy relationship, my mother and me. We are very different, she's a peculiar and complex person, with a strong tendency to shape me to her image, because that's just what people do. I know she doesn't mean any harm. On the other hand, I've always been very independent and rebel even, I want to be me even when I don't know exactly what that means. I'm a lot like her in some ways, of course, and I can tell that more and more as I grow older.

I think our relationship got a lot better when I was sick. That may have been the first time both of us lowered our weapons. She allowed herself to be powerless, I allowed myself to admit I needed her. Being sick happened to be (or brought with it) the end of my teenage years and since then I've been seing the world through her perspective, as an adult I mean. I think that when I become a mother myself it will be another turning point. It will either bring us further in synch or make us total strangers to one another.

We went out for dinner and the only cousing from my grandmother Aurora side of the family went along. His wife stayed at home because she might have H1N1... While there we talked about my grandparents and shared stories the others didn't know. Lately, whenever my grandparents come up in a conversation, I get all emotional, because I'm so scared to forget them. They died when I was so young. But even if I forget the details, I know my grandmother Aurora will always be someone with a great influence on me.

And by the end of the dinner, my mother's cousin said that he's come to a point in his life that he no longer cares about diplomacy, he wants to get away from the people he doesn't care about and tell the ones he does what he feels for them. Then my mother said she had read an email earlier that day about the importance of compliment and that had got her thinking.

So, instead of babbling about today's class at Dotquilts or the progress I'm making with the Christmas presents, I decided to write about my family. It's far from perfect, but it's the one I have.

Fazendo as contas / Doing the math

I'm really proud of myself: I manage to get a good advance on my quilt, enough so that I can go to my class this week with something to show. Right now I have 176 triangles, all cut, sewn and pressed. It's 22 from 4 different colours plus the corresponding 88 of the main colour (orangish). And just like Luisa had said it only took me a small effort and it didn't take that long (aproximately 5 hours for the whole process). The only thing that's weighing on my conscious is that I'm lacking the squares for the side bar, I was supposed to have more by now, it's just that I forgot how I made the ones I already have... I really wish I wasn't so forgetful and I'm hoping doing patchwork will help me with that too, since it's so terapeutical!

All I want for Christmas

Every year around this time people start asking me what I want for Christmas.
Every year I ask for wool because winter rhymes with knitting... and every year they ignore me.
This year I'm going to ask for fabrics and I sure do hope my wish comes true, because all the free time I manage until Christmas I'll be sewing some presents and that may reduce my stash considerably.
I have some plans, but I won't share them, or it would ruin the surprise...

Crise de identidade / Identity crisis

Sei do que gosto - quadrados, cor, simplicidade, calor, funcionalidade... Sei quem admiro - Amy Butler, Kaffee Fassett...

Pensei, pensei, pensei... e decidi que "by Daisy" define-me melhor.

I know what I like - squares, colour, simplicity, warmth, function... I know who I admire - Amy Butler, Kaffee Fassett... And I have some fellow crafters that I follow more closely (but I'm not going to say who eheheh). I just didn't know exactly who I was as a "crafter" myself.

That's why I needed to change the blog look, but also, and most of all, the name. It didn't make sense writing under the alias "Uma dona babada" because this isn't where I write about my love for animals. I thought a lot and figured "by Daisy" defined me better. It's one of my favourite nicknames of mine, anyway. And I do have a lot of nicknames!

This makes perfect sense to me, but I'm aware that it's just for me and not for other people. But that's ok.

Serendipity

Do you know when you visit a blog and then you follow that person's favourite links or you take a peak at the links from the people who posted a comment and then you stumble across another blog that you start to visit often? And so on and so forth...

It happens to me all the time and that's how I ended up in
Canton Village, where an amazing giveaway is going on.

I suggest that you all visit it too and participate!

I just wish I had more time to visit other quilter's blog and leave them comments, as well as time to dedicate to my projects. My next patchwork class is on the 5th, because I was hoping that until then I would have some time to do some homework, but the way this is going, I don't think so... hmpf!

I need to clear my head. I'm good under a deadline, I'm just not good with the chaos in my own mind. That's why, although it my be logical to have several projects going on simultaneously (specially those easy ones in between more time consuming ones), the truth is I rather finish one before focusing on another.
That is one of the reasons why I haven't been working in my new couch quilt.
That and the fact that I'm scared of having forgotten some steps. Or worse, not liking the result.

The little laptop cover for Nônô (that I should have done during my summer holidays in August).

The cell phone purse for my friend Sílvia, matching the bag I gave her on her birthday. I didn't manage to take a single good photo of it that showed the free-quilting I did on the inside or the little strap to close it which took longer to make than the purse itself. hehehe

You heard me right!

I've mentioned the quilt I'm making for my evenings spent in the couch. I started it in my classes at Dotquilts, using fabrics I bought there, in autumn colors (not because of the season we're in but because those are the colours of my living room - beige, sand, orange and chocolate).
I wanted to learn how to make triangles, so the center top is going to be a pin-wheel pattern, the framing will be a nine-patch, and I think I already know which of the fabrics I'll use for the biding. Oooh, but not so fast. The truth is I have been procrastinating. Well, maybe "procrastinating" isn't the right word, but I can't think of another.
I'm afraid I won't like the result, because I don't think it's "me". I don't have a logic reason to think this way, since I like the fabrics and I was the one who chose to do triangles. I don't know, I just so much more into squares and bright and happy colours.
And I'm not that far behing either. I have everything cut into pieces and everyone knows that is one of the most time consuming tasks. Right? hehehe
Here is what I have been making (and not making as much as I would like...).

Not so much a Christmas project...

I bought an Amy Buttler pattern to do 3 different aprons. It might not be your typical Christmas project, but I have a hunch that it's going to be what all my friends are going to be getting. It's three different aprons, that I can do in different sizes, not to mention the different fabrics, so noone can complain that it's not personalized.

Só podia... / It figures...

*** Mind the translation ***

After my first lesson at Dotquilts, of course I had to leave my fabrics behind. And because I truly believed I would have time do to some homework (silly me), I went back just to get them. And then, because I was there without any hurry to start a lesson, I ended up buying some new fabrics, but I'm not going to say to do what and to whom just yet.

Then, when I went there to have my second lesson, with the sole purpose of doing the triangles for the center top of my quilt (I chose a pinwheel pattern) of course I forgot the fabrics again, but at home! Yes, it would have been better if I just hadn't gone to the store to get them the first time, because not only did I not get work done at home, but then I had to buy more fabrics for the second lesson. Is it just me???

This weekend, I would really like to do some work, in the side bar and in the center top, because I have all the triangles cut and ready. I decided not to have any more lessons until I finish this (and I'm scared to death that I may forget what I learned... ahahaha).

Dotquilts

Comecei então a fazer o meu primeiro quilt.

*** Mind the translation ***

Yesterday I had a patchwork lesson at Dotquilts and I loved it. Not only it is more practical for me in terms of location and schedule, but I also felt an immediate connection with the place itself and the owner. This shop opened a few months ago and the lessons take place upstairs, after working hours during the week and with few people at a time. Also, I have total freedom in choosing the project (I wasn't a fan of the idea of having to do a Christmas project).

Of course I got really tired because I had to leave work, run to this place, skip dinner and I couldn't barely keep my eyes open. But it was worth it and I intend to do it again (although I'll probably take something to eat with me next time).

And so I started my first quilt. It's going to be a sofa quilt, to replace the cheap blankets I usually have there, that always get dirty with the dog's fur and start looking old really quickly. I had to buy fabrics which I wouldn't normally buy, both in colours - pumpkin-orange, vanilla, chocolate-brown - and in patterns, which was challenging. But I think I'll love it. So far, I'm doing nine-patch side bars, and obviously what I didn't finish during the class I took home as homework. My next class will be next week and even if I don't finish the side bars until then, I'll start the triangles for the center top.

I'm sure it will turn out great and that I'll love every minute in the process.

A slap in the face

Ando a brincar às costuras há uns meses e adoro - dá-me prazer, faz-me bem.

Ooops!

I'm writing today with a anew sense of humbleness. I've been toying around with sewing for a little while and I love it - it brings be pleasure, it's does me good. But when I visit other blogs from people who take sewing and quilting more seriously and for a long time... I'm KO! Seriously, there are fantastic people out there, far more handy and imaginative than me, who do priceless pieces. Will I ever even reach half the level of my new idols?

I would like to think so. That someday my pieces will no longer be just to give to my closest friends. That someday they will be good enough to actually sell them to a real client. That someday I'll have a brand name and an Etsy Store.

But, for now, time is nowhere to be seen. I'm once again missing buying fabrics, doing a piece from scratch, going to classes, learning... using my imagination. But between work, the volunteer work with rescued animals, the dates with friends and the family reunions, it has been close to impossible. And I don't like to go up to my workspace just "because", I have to be in the real mood for it. Again, it's supposed to be a pleasure and not an obligation.

PS - The little pc purse I'm doing to Nônô remains unfinished. Ooops!
