Próximas leituras (or so I hope...) / Next readings (or so I hope...)

Me - 24 New Reasons to Love Sewing.

The new Amanda Blake Soule book: Handmade Home.

One by Anna Maria Horner which, despite having only 24 projects, has lots of tips beyond the projects itselves: Seams to Me - 24 New Reasons to Love Sewing.

And I'll be waiting for a book by Amy Butler that will really be worth it because she is, so far, my favourite fabrics designer!!!

I found here some useful advice for those who, like me, are learning what types of materials should be chosen (and what some english technhical terms mean).

3ª aula / 3rd lesson

Just my luck! I had been thinking about a purse to keep the baby-laptop my colleague Rita has and that was exactly the lesson's project. Well, actually it was a purse to keep the famous Magalhaes laptop, but I slightly adapted it.
I still have some finishing details left, and it is no longer a surprise, because I had to check if it fit the laptop it was meant for, but it still is my double farewell / birthday present and I think I nailed it (if you don't mind me saying it).

Aceito encomendas... cof cof!!!

It's very easy to make and it is ideal for those small laptops so hot right now (some bring their own purse but it is ugly) or for the children who carry the Magalhaes laptop everywhere without having any caution with it. And this is because is has batting (the foam for quilting, in a free transalation).

I'm taking order... cof cof!!!

Nada feito... / Not a chance...

When I finally got to go to the shop, certain that I would be put out of my misery, I found out that the fabrics with which I had fallen in love were practically sold out. There were a little bit of each, some there were nothing at all, and I felt so sad because I had great projects in mind (by "great" I mean a duvet cover for my bed at least 2m x 3m). When I'm finally starting to feel at ease to fligh higher and I decide to make something for myself rather that to give someone else... not a chance!

What I learned from this is: if there are new fabrics in a shop, we must run there and buy it. We can't postpone, oh because I'm busy, oh because I can't spend any more money right now, oh because on week days there's so much traffic to cross the bridge. Oh and now you don't get to have the fabrics you want, here you go!

Made in Brasil

*** Mind the Translation ***

The fabrics my parents brought me from Brazil are not 100% cotton and I'm not really sure what they are really. They were bought at the sambódromo in Rio and I'm under the impression these are the same fabrics with which the costumes for the famous carnival parade are made of.

As I don't plan on dancing samba and these fabrics - with their colours and patterns so "brazilian" and their different texture - don't get along with anything else I have, I'm not feeling that inspired.

I'll take your suggestions, please!

When I'll be put out of my misery...

...which means, when I get the time and money, this will be my "revenge"!

Sewing junkie

A sério, estou a "ressacar"!

*** Mind the Translation ***

I'm so busy with extra work every night that I don't have time to relax a little bit, go to the gym (one staircase away), watch a romatic film and, above all, sewing.
Really, I have a "hangover"! I haven't sewed since last saturday. Dreadful! And so it will stay for the next few days (until the end of the month, actually). Really dreadful!

Provavelmente só depois da silly season... / Probably only after the silly season is over...

...tentarei ir a estes workshops. Até lá, vou costurar, pesquisar, praticar, errar, fazer, desmanchar, enfim, aprender...

...I'll try to go to these workshops. Until then, I'll sew, research, practise, make mistakes, try again, undo... in a word, learn!

Missão cumprida! / Mission accomplished!

A prenda para a avó Noca:

The gift for grandma Noca:

(I know, I know, I made two pot holders and only one glove, but that's because the other one turned out smaller and then I ran out of fabric and time. Noone tought is was weird. On the contrary, everyone loved it and the one-hand assemble was a huge success!)

A prenda para a minha amiga Débora:

The gift for my friend Débora:

(a reverseble bag, made out of an Amy Butler pattern, minus the bow, with fabric bought at the shop where I have classes and the majority of the work done during yesterday's class, and then finished in the my workroom, a little bit under pressure. I'm surprised that with all the setbacks of the class and my weekend in general, the bag turned out so well - if you don't mind me saying it. She loved it and I was thrilled to be called a "talented girl" eheheh)

And, YES, I'm aware that taking pictures with my mobile phone, without light, in a hurry, sometimes after handing out the presents, is not ideal. I have to find another method...

Next in line

*** Mind the Translation ***

My next project is another birthday present, this time for my good friend Débora, and is due... tomorrow!

In a typically Portuguese-fashion, I left everything to the last minute, hoping that today's class might inspire me. If not, plan B was to make a toiletry bag (like the one from my first lesson) with my baby theme blue fabrics.

Débora is like me, she will love anythin I make for her, even if it is far from perfection (like Grandma Noca's pot holders and gloves, by the way...) just because I made it especially for her.

(I'm not going to get the excuse of being a begginer for much longer...)

Baby theme

And these are the ones I bought bearing in mind the couples amongst us that are popping out children like crazy!

Now... let the games begin!

Animal theme

These are the fat quarts I bought at the shop where I have my classes. I plan on doing something nice and give the money to the animal organization where I volunteer.

Balanço / Doing the math

*** Mind the Translation ***

I finished the pot holders on tuesday and left the gloves nearly finished (only the binding is missing). Grandma Noca's birthday is today, but I just found out that the party is not until saturday, so today I can take the day off. I haven't done anything else but her present since saturday...

Along the way, I managed to break two machine needles (oops) and cut twice, yes twice, the same side of the glove, instead of cutting simetric sides (hello?!). You have no idea how confused I must have looked when I realised I had the back of the right hand three times instead of having one back and one front.

Laugh away, I know I have!

I'll post some photos soon, so that you can see what I meant about improvising to compensate for my lack of batting know-how.

a la Lili Caneças *

Costurar não é só costurar.
Muitas vezes, costurar é cortar, alfinetar, desmanchar...

...mas continuo a adorar!

Sewing is not just sewing.
A lot of the time, sewing is cutting, pinning, undoing...

...but I'm still loving it!

A prenda para a avó Noca... / Grandma Noca's present...

Inspirei-me nesta:

... was supposed to be some pillows for the living room where every saturday the family comes together. I was inspired by this one:

... que vi neste livro:

... which I saw in this book:

GRRRR!!!

Por isso, improvisei. Que é o que neste maldito país toda a gente faz!

... made out of ribbons leftovers (which I'm sure are called something else, because I've heard my grandmother and my mother say it a bunch of times and now I can't remember).

But then I paid closer attention to the slipcover of grandma Noca's sofas (because of Bimkie, the cat) and I realised that the stripes wouldn't work and that the colours I would have to use would be too much "Portuguese flag", let's put it that way. So R, one of the grandsons of the birthday person (I'm just the in-law), suggested pot holders. Well, it's not like we don't go to have lunch and dinner every saturday. There are always lots of big pots of food for everyone, so it would really mean something. But I still don't know how to use batting! And why? Because during the summer this damn country is on hold and not even a innocent patchwork less a person can have... :( And here I am eager to learn and nothing!!! GRRRR!!! So, I improvised. Which is what everyone in this damn country does!

Preparativos

*** Mind the Translation ***

This is my little secret place.
I still have to work on the decoration, but the main thing is that I've cleaned and tidied up my future "workplace", and now everything is ready so that big creations are born inside these four walls...
